Application Material for International Students

The next semester for which applicants will be considered is Fall 2010 (as we do not admit students for spring semesters). The application procedure is initiated by your returning the following items to the Chemical Engineering Department (please read carefully):

  1. Official transcripts sent from each institute you have attended, with an official English translation, if necessary, and your official class ranking, if available. (Initially, we can consider your application based on certified photocopies of your transcripts.)
  2. Official GRE scores sent from ETS (Advanced GRE is not essential). ETS should use institutional code 6870 to send your scores to us at the University of Houston.
  3. Official TOEFL scores sent from ETS (this is not required if your Bachelor's degree was received from a country where English is the native language). The code for the University of Houston is 6870.
  4. Three (3) Letters of Recommendation from your references (form attached* ).
  5. A completed Graduate Study Request Form (form attached* ).
  6. A completed University of Houston "International Student Application for Graduate Studies" (Texas Common Online Application).
  7. Statement of Purpose (no longer than 1 page)
  8. A signed Statement of Understanding and Letter of Financial Backing (attached* ).
  9. Passport Photograph.
  10. Non-refundable application fee of $75.00. Checks must be payable to University of Houston.

If your current financial situation does not permit you to have ETS send us your GRE and TOEFL score-reports directly, we can consider your application based on copies of these reports initially. Eventually, however, we must have the official scores from ETS. Please send us photocopies, regardless.

Send ALL COMPONENTS of your completed package, including your application fee, to arrive no later than 15 February 2010, to this address:

Attn: Graduate Admissions Coordinator

You will be notified by mail concerning your application status. Qualified candidates who are accepted into our graduate program receive full financial aid. No separate application is necessary for you to be considered for financial aid. If, however, financial resources allow you to apply to our program without financial aid, please submit the Letter of Financial Backing, enclosed in the application booklet. At this time it is not necessary to submit the Educational Experience Form or the Permission Release which accompany the application booklet.

Standards of admission are very high. Accepted students typically are in the top 10% of their graduating class, have a TOEFL score over 550, and have a total GRE score (Verbal + Quantitative) of 1200. Please contact us with any unaddressed questions concerning our graduate program or application procedure.
